Translator's note. In verse 8, "the eight ideas of things" renders the Tibetan chu gye kyi tokpa (chu — here "thoughts," not "dharmas"; gye — eight; tokpa — ideas). Geshe Michael Roach keeps the phrase deliberately open, because the commentaries read the "eight" in two different ways, and he says both are right:
1. The eight worldly thoughts (jikten chu gye) — being pleased or upset at gain and loss, pleasure and pain, praise and blame, fame and disgrace. This is how Chekawa explained it, about nine hundred years ago. Geshe covers this reading in Class Two. 2. The eight extremes — the eight ways of seeing things as existing from their own side (starting, stopping, and so on, from the opening of Nagarjuna's Root Verses on the Middle Way). This is how the first Changkya Rinpoche (1642–1714) explained it. Geshe covers this reading in Class Three.
The Chinese keeps Geshe's wording rather than replacing it with either set, so that both readings stay available to the reader.
